My refrigerator water line is leaking. Is that a big deal?

It can be. The thin line feeding the ice maker and water dispenser is often plastic, and it gets kinked or cracked when the fridge is pushed back into place. Because it sits behind the fridge, a slow leak can soak the floor and the cabinets for weeks before anyone notices. Turn off its valve and pull the fridge out to look. A braided line and a proper shutoff valve make it much less likely to happen again.

Why is there water under my kitchen sink?

Look before you assume the worst. Common sources are a loose slip nut on the drain, a leaking dishwasher connection, a disposal seal, the faucet supply lines or the base of the faucet itself. Dry everything off, run the water, and watch where the drip starts. If you cannot spot it, or the cabinet floor is already soft, turn off the valves under the sink and call us.

My shower handle is hard to turn. Does the valve need replacing?

Usually only the cartridge inside it does. Hard water leaves scale on the cartridge, and builder-grade cartridges wear out quickly, so the handle gets stiff, drips or stops mixing the temperature properly. Replacing the cartridge is a common repair and does not mean opening the wall. If the valve itself is damaged or parts are no longer made, we can talk about replacing the whole valve.

Is a leak detector or automatic water shutoff worth it?

For many homes, yes. Small battery sensors placed under sinks, behind the fridge and near the water heater sound an alarm when they get wet. A whole-house automatic shutoff valve goes a step further and closes the main when it senses a leak, which is especially useful if you travel. Some insurance companies offer a discount for them. We can tell you where a shutoff valve would go on your main line.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
