My air conditioner is blowing warm air. What is usually wrong?

Nine times out of ten it is one of four things: a failed capacitor, a refrigerant leak, a condenser coil packed with dirt, or a blocked drain line that has tripped the safety switch and shut the system down. We can tell which within a few minutes of getting there. What matters more is finding out why it failed, because replacing the part without answering that just buys you a few months.

Why do capacitors fail so often in Port Richey?

Two reasons, and both of them are local. Capacitors do not like heat, and our systems run nine months of the year, so they age faster here than they would up north. Then there is the lightning. Pasco County sits in one of the worst corridors in the country for it, and it is almost never the strike itself, it is the surge behind it. A surge protector at the condenser costs very little and I recommend one on every system we work on.

My system shut itself off and there is water near the air handler. What is that?

That is almost always a blocked condensate drain line. The humidity here means your system pulls a lot of water out of the air, and the line grows algae and clogs up. Most systems have a float switch that cuts the power rather than let the water spill into your house, so what feels like a breakdown is actually the system protecting you. We clear the line, and treating it at maintenance keeps it from coming back.

Is it worth repairing a system that is more than ten years old?

Usually, yes. Age on its own does not decide it. A ten-year-old system with a bad capacitor or contactor is worth fixing without thinking twice. The same system with a leaking evaporator coil often is not, because you are spending a good chunk of a new system on a repair. We will put both numbers in front of you and let you decide. We are not going to open with a replacement quote.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
