Why is ice forming on my AC lines or outdoor unit?

Ice usually means the system is not moving enough air or is low on refrigerant. A dirty filter, a blocked return vent or a failing blower motor can starve the coil of airflow until it freezes. Turn the cooling off, set the fan to on so it thaws faster, and change the filter. If it freezes up again after that, call us, because running a frozen system can damage the compressor.

What is that burning smell when my AC turns on?

A dusty smell for the first few minutes after the system has been off for a while is normal. A sharp electrical or burning plastic smell is not. That can be a motor overheating or a wire burning at a connection. Turn the system off at the thermostat and at the breaker, and call us before you run it again.

Why does my AC keep turning on and off every few minutes?

That is called short cycling, and it is hard on the equipment. It can be as simple as a clogged filter or a thermostat sitting in direct sun, or it can be a refrigerant problem, a failing control part or a system that is too big for the house. Check the filter and the thermostat first. If it keeps happening, we will find the cause before it wears out the compressor.

Is it safe to keep running my AC if it is making a loud noise?

It depends on the noise. A rattle can be a loose panel, but grinding or screeching usually means a motor bearing is going, and banging can mean something broke inside the unit. Grinding and screeching tend to get worse fast and can take the motor with them. Shut it off and call us, and we will tell you whether it is a quick fix or something bigger.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
