My system still uses R-22. Should I replace it?

Not automatically. R-22 has not been produced in the United States since 2020, so what is left is expensive, and a leak that needs a recharge can cost more than the system is worth. If your R-22 system runs fine and holds its charge, keep using it. If it is leaking or needs a major part, that is usually the point where a new system makes more sense, and we will show you both numbers side by side.

Does salt air near the Gulf damage my AC?

It does, slowly. Homes in Gulf Harbors and along the canals get salt on the outdoor unit every day, and it eats at the thin aluminum fins and the copper tubing in the condenser coil. You will usually see the fins turn white and crumbly before the coil starts to leak. Rinsing the outdoor unit with fresh water every month or so helps a lot, and when a condenser near the water does need replacing, we talk to you about coils made to hold up to it.

My AC stopped working after a lightning storm. What happened?

Lightning does not have to hit your house to cause trouble. A surge on the power lines can take out the control board in the outdoor unit or the air handler, or the capacitor that starts the motors. Check the breakers first, both at the panel and at the disconnect next to the outdoor unit. If those are fine and the system still will not start, leave it off and call us rather than resetting it over and over. If storms keep doing this to you, a surge protector for the system is worth considering.

What should I set my thermostat to when my home sits empty?

Do not turn it off. A closed-up house in New Port Richey gets humid fast, and humidity is what brings on the musty smell and mold. Most people set it somewhere around 78 to 82 degrees and let it run, and if your thermostat has a humidity setting, use it. Before you leave, change the filter and pour a cup of vinegar down the condensate line, so the drain does not clog and shut the system off while nobody is home.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
