My heat pump is blowing cool air in heat mode. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. On a cold, damp morning a heat pump goes into defrost every so often, and for a few minutes the air at the vents feels cool while the outdoor unit steams. That is normal. If it blows cool air all the time, or the outdoor unit stays caked in ice, the defrost control or the reversing valve may have failed, and that is when to call us.

The outdoor unit clicks but never starts.

That click is usually the contactor pulling in with nothing happening after it, which points at a failed capacitor, a compressor struggling to start, or a burned wire. Do not keep cycling the thermostat to make it try again, because a compressor straining against a bad capacitor overheats fast. Turn it off and we will test it properly.

Water is dripping from one of my ceiling vents.

That is usually condensation. When cold air hits a vent or a duct in a hot, humid attic and the insulation around it is missing or torn, it sweats and drips. It can also be a clogged drain dumping water inside the air handler. Either way it stains the ceiling and can grow mold, so it is worth finding the cause instead of wiping it up and waiting.

My AC will not shut off even after it reaches the temperature I set.

Check that the thermostat fan is set to auto rather than on. If the outdoor unit keeps running with the thermostat turned off completely, the contactor is probably stuck closed, and the system will run until something fails. Shut it off at the breaker and call us. If it runs constantly but never quite reaches the set temperature, that is a capacity problem instead.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
