My neighborhood is switching from septic to sewer. What does that mean for my plumbing?

It means your house drain gets connected to the new sewer line, and the old tank is pumped out and filled or removed under a permit. Since everything will soon run through that main drain, it is a good time to have it inspected for cracks or roots before the switch. If you are not sure what the change means for your house, ask us and we will walk you through it.

My shower goes hot or cold when someone flushes a toilet.

That is a pressure swing. When the toilet refills it pulls cold water away from the shower, and an older shower valve cannot compensate, so you get a blast of hot. Newer pressure balancing valves hold the temperature steady. Depending on what you have, we either replace the cartridge or the valve itself.

Can I use a garbage disposal if my house is on septic?

You can, but go easy on it. A disposal sends a lot of food solids into the tank, which fills it faster and means pumping it more often. Keep grease, coffee grounds and stringy scraps out of it entirely. If you run it every day on an older tank, it is worth rethinking how often that tank gets pumped.

Why does it take so long for hot water to reach my kitchen?

Usually because the water heater sits at the far end of the house, and the hot water in the pipe has cooled by the time you open the tap, so you run that cold water down the drain every time. A recirculation setup keeps hot water close to the fixtures, and in some houses moving or adding a water heater makes more sense. We look at the layout and tell you which one is worth doing.
