Water is dripping outside near the outdoor unit or the house.

Some dripping is normal. The condensate drain line usually ends outside near the foundation, and on a humid day it can run steadily, which means it is working. What is not normal is water pooling at the base of the outdoor unit with no drain there, ice melting off the copper lines, or water coming out of the soffit or a wall. Those point to a problem worth a call.

My ducts make a loud pop or bang when the system starts.

That is usually the metal ductwork flexing when the blower kicks on, sometimes called oil canning. It happens when the duct is undersized, a return is restricted, or a panel is thin and unbraced, so the pressure snaps it in and out. A dirty filter can make it worse. The fix is usually easing the restriction or stiffening the duct, and we can find which section is doing it.

My AC will not turn off.

First check that the thermostat is not set lower than the house can reach on a hot day, because then it simply never stops. If the thermostat is off or satisfied and the outdoor unit still runs, the contactor inside may be stuck closed, and the system will run until something fails. In that case, turn it off at the breaker and call us. Running nonstop in cool weather is also a sign of low refrigerant or a failing part.

There is a whistling sound coming from the vents or the return.

Whistling almost always means air is being forced through a gap that is too small. A clogged filter, a return grille that is undersized for the system, closed vents or gaps around a grille can all cause it. Start with a clean filter. If it keeps whistling, the return may be too small for the system, which also makes the blower work harder than it should, and we can measure it.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
