Should I use pleated filters or the cheap fiberglass ones?

A basic pleated filter is usually the best balance. The thin fiberglass filters mostly protect the equipment and catch very little dust. Pleated filters in the middle of the MERV range, around 8 to 11, catch much more without choking the airflow. The very high MERV filters can restrict airflow on systems that were not designed for them, so go higher only if your return is sized for it.

Can I pour vinegar down my AC drain line?

Yes, and it helps. A cup of white vinegar poured into the drain line access every month or two during the cooling season slows the algae that clogs it. Use plain vinegar and nothing else, and never mix it with bleach or other cleaners. If your line has no access port near the air handler, we can add one during a visit so it is easy to do yourself.

Does the indoor coil need to be cleaned too?

Eventually, yes. The indoor coil sits behind the filter and stays wet while the system runs, so any dust that gets past the filter sticks to it and slowly cuts the airflow and the cooling. With good filters it may go several years, but a coil that is visibly matted or a system that has lost cooling power needs a proper cleaning. We check it on every visit and tell you when it is time.

Do you need to get into my attic during a maintenance visit?

If the air handler is up there, yes. Many homes around here have the air handler and most of the ductwork in the attic, and that is where drain pans overflow, ducts come apart and insulation gets crushed without anyone noticing. We need clear access to the attic opening and a path to the unit. If your attic is hard to get into, let us know ahead of time.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
