What is a load calculation, and do I need one?

A load calculation, often called a Manual J, works out how much cooling your house actually needs based on its size, windows, insulation, orientation and how it is built. It is how a system should be sized, instead of copying whatever tonnage the old unit was. An oversized system short cycles and leaves the house damp, and an undersized one runs nonstop. We do the calculation before we recommend a size.

Can I move the outdoor unit to a different spot?

Usually, as long as there is a reasonable path for the refrigerant lines and power to the new spot. Common reasons are getting it away from a bedroom window, making room for a pool or patio, or a side yard that floods. Longer line runs have limits set by the manufacturer, and the move is best done during a replacement, when new lines are going in anyway. We will tell you what the move adds to the price.

Do I need a new thermostat with a new system?

Often, but not always. A basic single stage system works with most standard thermostats. Two stage and variable speed systems usually need a compatible thermostat to use the features you are paying for, and some brands require their own control. Many newer thermostats also need a common wire for power. We check what you have and tell you whether it can stay.

How should I get ready for installation day?

Clear a path to the air handler, whether that is a closet, the garage or the attic access, and move anything stored right around it. Make sure the outdoor unit is easy to reach and the gate is unlocked. Keep pets in a closed room, since doors will be open. Plan on being without cooling for most of the day, and if it is hot, a fan or two in the room you will be in helps.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
