The outdoor unit hums but the fan is not spinning.

Turn it off. A humming unit with a still fan usually means a failed fan motor or the capacitor that starts it, and if the compressor keeps running without the fan moving air across the coil, it overheats quickly. Sometimes the fan will spin if you nudge it with a stick, which tells us the capacitor is the problem, but that is a sign to call, not a fix.

There is oily residue on the refrigerant lines or the coil.

That is often the sign of a leak. Refrigerant carries oil through the system, and where it escapes it leaves a greasy film that collects dirt. It is worth having checked before the charge drops far enough to strain the compressor. We find the leak, tell you where it is and what it costs to repair, and whether the rest of the system is worth that money.

The insulation on my refrigerant line is falling apart. Does that matter?

It does. The black foam on the larger line keeps the cold suction line from picking up heat and sweating on its way back to the outdoor unit. Once it crumbles in the sun, you lose some efficiency and can get condensation dripping where you do not want it. Replacing it is inexpensive, and we usually do it while we are already there.

Is a hissing or bubbling sound from the system normal?

A short hiss or gurgle when the system starts or shuts off can be normal as the refrigerant pressures even out. A steady hiss while it runs, or bubbling you never used to hear, can mean a leak or a problem with the metering device. If a new sound shows up along with weaker cooling, shut it off and have it checked before it gets expensive.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
