What is a line set, and does it need to be replaced?

The line set is the pair of copper lines that carries refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units. If it is the right size, in good shape and properly cleaned, it can often be reused. If it is undersized, damaged, buried in a wall with a bad joint, or contaminated from a burned out compressor, it needs replacing. We check it before we quote so it does not turn into a surprise.

Will a new system be quieter than my old one?

Almost always. Newer outdoor units have better insulated compressors and quieter fans, and variable speed systems spend most of their time running at low speed where you barely hear them. Indoors, a lot of the noise comes from the ductwork and the return, so if the old system was loud inside, we look at that too.

Can I go ductless for the whole house?

You can, and in some houses it is a good choice, especially older homes with bad ductwork or no attic space for new ducts. You put a head in each main room and control each one separately. It costs more up front than replacing a central system on good ducts, and each head needs its filter cleaned. We lay out both options side by side.

Can I replace just the indoor coil?

Sometimes, if the coil has a leak and the rest of the system is fairly new and still under warranty. On an older system it rarely makes sense, because a new coil matched to an old outdoor unit that is near the end just moves the next failure somewhere else. We look at the ages and the warranty and give you the honest math.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
