Can a smart thermostat actually save me money?

It can, if you let it do its job. A smart thermostat that learns your schedule and backs off while you are out trims the runtime without you thinking about it, and the remote control is handy for a house that sits empty part of the year. It will not fix a system that is struggling, and on some variable speed equipment the brand thermostat works better. We can tell you which makes sense for what you have.

Would a whole house dehumidifier help?

In a house that stays damp even when the thermostat is satisfied, often yes. The air conditioner removes moisture only while it runs, so in spring and fall, when it barely runs, the humidity creeps up. A whole house dehumidifier ties into the ductwork and handles that on its own. Before recommending one we check whether the real problem is an oversized system or a duct leak, since those are cheaper to fix.

My thermostat says aux heat. Is something wrong?

Usually not. Auxiliary heat is the backup electric heat that kicks in on its own when it gets cold enough that the heat pump needs help, and it also runs briefly while the heat pump is in defrost. What is not normal is aux heat running most of the day on a mild afternoon. That points to a heat pump that is not pulling its weight, and it will show up on the power bill.

Why is my house so dusty even with a new filter?

Usually because air is getting into the system somewhere it should not. A leak on the return side of the ductwork, or around the air handler cabinet, pulls dusty air straight out of the attic or the garage and blows it around the house, skipping the filter entirely. We find those leaks with the system running and seal them, which helps the dust and the power bill at the same time.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
