The outdoor unit is making a grinding or squealing noise.

Turn it off. Grinding or squealing usually comes from fan motor bearings wearing out, a blade rubbing on something, or a stick or debris caught inside the cage. Left running, a failing fan motor can quit completely and take the compressor with it by letting it overheat. Clear anything you can see from the outside without reaching in, then have it checked.

My AC cools for a while, then stops, then starts again later.

That often means the compressor is overheating and shutting itself off to cool down. A dirty outdoor coil, a weak fan motor or a failing capacitor are the usual causes, and a low refrigerant charge can do it too. The system protects itself for a while, but each overheated cycle shortens its life, so it is worth finding the reason before it stops for good.

Fire ants got into my outdoor unit.

They love the warmth and the electrical parts, and out here they are a regular repair call. Ants packed into the contactor can keep it from closing, or bridge the contacts and burn them. Do not dump insecticide inside the unit. Turn the power off and call us, and we will clean out the nest, replace any damaged parts and suggest ways to keep them away from the pad.

I nicked the lines or the wire outside with the string trimmer.

Turn the system off and take a look. If the thin wire running to the outdoor unit is cut, the unit will not start, and a clean splice with proper connectors fixes it. If only the foam on the big copper line is torn, the line may be fine and just needs new insulation. If you hear hissing or see oil on the copper, the line itself is damaged and refrigerant is escaping, which needs a proper repair and a leak test.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
