All of my drains are slow at once. Is that different from one clogged sink?

Very different. One slow sink is usually a clog close to that fixture. When every drain in the house slows down, or the lowest one backs up while the washer runs, the problem is in the main line heading out to the street. Plunging a single drain will not touch that. We clear the main line and run a camera down it to see whether roots, a sag or a broken section caused it.

Can I use liquid drain cleaner?

We would rather you did not. It rarely clears a real blockage, it sits in the pipe eating at older cast iron and at rubber seals, and it makes the drain dangerous for whoever opens it next. A plunger or a hand auger is safer for a simple clog. If the clog keeps coming back, that is the pipe telling you something, and a bottle from the store will not fix it.

My pipes bang when I shut off a faucet. Is that bad?

That is water hammer, and it is worth dealing with. When a fast closing valve, like the one on a washing machine, stops the flow suddenly, that pressure has to go somewhere and it hits the pipe. Over time it loosens joints and strains fittings. Sometimes it is a loose pipe strap, sometimes it needs an arrestor, and sometimes the house pressure is simply set too high. We check the pressure first, because that is the cheapest fix.

My water heater sits in the garage. Does it need a drain pan?

It should have one, with a drain line running outside, and the same goes for a heater in a closet or an attic. Tanks do not fail politely. They let go at the bottom seam and dump everything they are holding. A pan with a working drain turns that into a wet floor instead of a ruined ceiling. If yours has no pan, or the pan drains into nothing, that is a one visit fix.
