Why do ants keep killing my air conditioner?

It is a real problem out here. Fire ants crawl into the contactor in the outdoor unit, get across the terminals and either weld it shut or short it out, so the system runs nonstop or will not start at all. Treating the ground around the unit helps, and so does sealing the spot where the low voltage wire comes in. When we replace a contactor we look for how they got in, or we will be back next summer.

My power blinks a lot. Can I run the air conditioner on a generator?

Only if the generator is sized for it and the system can handle the startup surge. A central air conditioner pulls a big spike the moment the compressor kicks on, and a small portable generator will either trip or brown out, which is hard on the equipment. A soft start kit lowers that spike and makes a larger portable workable. Ask us before you try it rather than after.

Does being on well water affect my air conditioning?

Not the cooling itself, but it affects what is around it. Well water is often heavy with iron, and if your sprinklers hit the outdoor unit you get rust and orange scale packed into the fins, which chokes the airflow and shortens the life of the unit. Aim the sprinklers away from it. If the coil is already stained, we can clean it and show you the difference.

How far out do you come?

We cover Weeki Wachee and the surrounding Hernando County communities along with our home area in Pasco. If you are down a long dirt road or out toward the coast, mention it when you call so we can plan the visit properly. We would rather give you an honest window than promise a time we cannot hit.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
