My home has a package unit outside instead of an indoor unit. Is that different?

It is. A package unit puts the whole system, cooling and air handling, in one cabinet outside, usually sitting beside a manufactured home with the ducts running underneath. A split system has the condenser outside and the air handler in a closet or the attic. We work on both, but the parts and the sizing are different, so it helps to know which one you have when you call.

Should my outdoor unit sit higher if I live near the water?

If you are somewhere that takes water in a storm, yes. Raising the condenser on a stand keeps it out of shallow flooding, and it costs far less to do during a replacement than after a surge. Once salt water gets inside a unit it corrodes the electrical parts from the inside out, and that usually turns into a replacement rather than a repair.

Why is my power bill so high in the summer when the AC seems fine?

Usually the system is working harder than you think. Leaky ducts in a hot attic throw away a good part of what you paid to cool, a dirty coil makes the unit run longer for the same result, and older equipment simply uses more power to do the same job. We check the cheap causes first and tell you what a fix is worth before you spend anything.

My system needs refrigerant every year. Is that normal?

No. Refrigerant is not fuel and it does not get used up, so a system that needs a charge every season is leaking. Topping it off each year costs money and lets the leak get worse, and on older systems that refrigerant is expensive. We look for the leak and put the cost of fixing it next to the cost of replacing the system, so you can pick.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
