Could my older home have lead pipes?

It is possible in a house built long ago, either in the line from the street or in the solder used on old copper. If you are not sure, the simplest step is to have the water tested, and we can look at the exposed pipe to see what it is made of. Until you know, run the cold water for a minute before drinking it if it has been sitting, and never use hot tap water for cooking.

What is a thermal expansion tank, and do I need one?

When a water heater heats water, the water expands. In a house with a pressure regulator or a check valve, that extra volume has nowhere to go, so the pressure spikes every time the heater runs, which is hard on the tank and the fixtures. An expansion tank gives it somewhere to go. Many areas now require one with a new water heater, and we check whether yours needs it.

My bathtub drains slowly but the sink is fine.

That is usually a hair clog right at the tub drain or the stopper, not a problem further down the line. Pulling the stopper and clearing the hair often fixes it in minutes. Skip the chemical drain cleaners, which are hard on older pipes. If it comes back quickly, there may be a partial blockage further down that needs a snake.

My garbage disposal hums but will not spin.

Turn it off at the switch first. A humming disposal is usually jammed by something hard caught in the blades. Many have a reset button on the bottom and a hex socket underneath for a wrench to free the blades by hand. Never reach inside. If it still hums after clearing the jam, the motor may be failing, and we can tell you whether a repair or a new unit makes more sense.
