Can you add central air to an older home that never had ducts?

Usually, yes. Where there is no attic or crawlspace room for full size ducts, a small duct high velocity system can run through much tighter spaces, and a ductless system avoids ducts altogether. Both can keep the character of an older house intact. We look at the framing, the attic and the rooms, then show you which option fits and what each one costs.

Why do my lights dim when the AC starts?

A compressor pulls a big surge of current for a moment when it starts, and a brief flicker can be normal. If the lights dim hard, the flicker is getting worse, or the unit struggles to start, something is off: a weak capacitor, a compressor that is getting hard to start, a loose connection or an undersized circuit. A hard start kit or a repair to the wiring usually fixes it. We test it rather than guess.

How do I tell how old my system is?

Look at the data plate on the outdoor unit and on the air handler. The manufacture date is sometimes printed plainly, and sometimes it is coded into the serial number, which we can read for you. Knowing the age helps with every decision, from whether a repair is worth it to whether the equipment still has warranty coverage.

Does shading the outdoor unit help?

A little. Shade lowers the temperature of the air around the unit, which helps it shed heat, but the gain is modest and it disappears if the shade blocks the airflow. Trees also drop leaves and seed pods into the coil. If you want shade, keep plantings a few feet back and leave the top of the unit completely open.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
