What should I check on my AC after a tropical storm?

Before turning it back on, look at the outdoor unit. Clear branches, leaves and debris from around and on top of it, make sure it is still level and sitting on its pad, and look for standing water or anything that got pushed into the fins. If floodwater reached the unit, or it was knocked off its pad, leave it off and have it inspected. A rinse with fresh water afterward helps if salt spray blew in.

Should I cover my outdoor unit during storm season?

Not while it might run. A cover traps moisture, invites pests and can choke the unit if someone turns the AC on. The units are built to sit out in the rain. If a storm is coming, securing loose items nearby that could be thrown into it does more good. If the house will be empty and the system off for a long stretch, a top-only cover is fine as long as it comes off before you use it.

What MERV rating should my air filter be?

For most homes, a filter in the MERV 8 to 11 range catches dust, pollen and mold spores well without restricting airflow too much. Higher ratings trap more, but a thick, dense filter on a system that was not designed for it can cut airflow, freeze the coil and make the blower work harder. If you want better filtration, we can check whether your system can handle it.

Are UV lights in the air handler worth it?

They can help in damp homes. A UV light aimed at the indoor coil keeps mold and bacteria from building up on the wet surface, which helps with musty smells and keeps the coil cleaner. It is not a replacement for regular cleaning, and the bulbs need replacing on a schedule. We can tell you whether your coil shows the kind of growth a UV light would help with.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
