Why are my supply vents sweating or dripping water?

Cold air coming out of the vent meets warm, damp air in the room or the attic, and moisture condenses on the metal, the same way a cold glass sweats. It usually points to high indoor humidity, a duct or boot that is not insulated or sealed where it meets the ceiling, or air leaking in from the attic. Left alone it stains ceilings and grows mold. We find where the warm, wet air is getting in and seal or insulate it.

What indoor humidity should I aim for?

Somewhere between about 40 and 55 percent keeps most homes comfortable and makes it hard for mold and dust mites to take hold. Above 60 percent, the house feels sticky even when the thermostat says it is cool. An inexpensive humidity monitor from a hardware store tells you where you stand. If your reading stays high, the system may be oversized, running the fan nonstop or short of airflow.

Should I add a whole-house dehumidifier?

It can be worth it in homes that stay damp even with a properly working AC, especially near the water or in houses that sit closed up for long stretches. A whole-house unit ties into the ductwork and pulls moisture out without overcooling the house. Before recommending one, we make sure the AC itself is sized and set up right, since that alone fixes a lot of humidity complaints.

Do ceiling fans actually lower my cooling bill?

They help, but only while someone is in the room. A fan does not cool the air, it moves it across your skin so you feel a few degrees cooler, which lets you set the thermostat a little higher. Leaving fans running in empty rooms just adds to the bill and a little heat from the motor. Make sure they spin counterclockwise in summer so they push air down.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
