Does living in the city make my AC work harder?

It does. Streets, parking lots and rooftops soak up heat all day and give it back all night, so neighborhoods close to downtown stay warmer after dark than open areas outside the city. Your system gets less of a break overnight and runs more hours over a year. That makes sizing, a clean outdoor coil and good attic insulation matter more here than they do out in the suburbs.

My condo's air handler is in a closet. Can you still service it?

Yes. Most condos and townhomes in Tampa put the air handler in a hallway closet or a small mechanical room, and that is routine work for us. Tight closets make regular filter changes and drain cleaning more important, because a problem there reaches the walls and floors fast. Let the association know we are coming if your building requires it, and we handle the rest.

What is the difference between a heat pump and an AC with heat strips?

Both cool the same way. The difference is winter. A heat pump runs in reverse to pull heat into the house, which costs much less to run than heat strips, electric coils in the air handler that work a lot like a toaster. In Tampa you only need heat for a few weeks of the year, so either can make sense. We look at how you use the system and the price difference before recommending one.

How long should an air conditioner last in Tampa?

Most systems here last somewhere around ten to fifteen years, and the long cooling season pushes them toward the low end of that range. Homes near the bay can lose a few more years to salt air on the outdoor coil. Regular maintenance, a properly sized system and a clean installation all help it last. Once yours passes ten, start budgeting for the replacement so the timing is your decision and not the system’s.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
