My AC turns on and off every few minutes. What causes that?

That is called short cycling. It can come from an oversized system that cools the air near the thermostat too fast, a dirty filter or frozen coil, low refrigerant, a thermostat sitting near a supply vent, or a safety switch tripping and resetting. Short cycling wears out the compressor and leaves the house humid. We find which one it is instead of guessing.

My thermostat screen is blank. Is the AC broken?

Not necessarily. Start by replacing the thermostat batteries if it uses them. If it does not, look at the air handler’s breaker and make sure the float switch on the drain has not tripped, since on some systems that cuts power to the thermostat. A blown fuse on the control board or a damaged thermostat wire can also do it. If none of the easy checks bring it back, call us.

Water is dripping from a pipe above a window outside. What does that mean?

That pipe is often the secondary or overflow drain, placed where you would notice it on purpose. When water comes out of it, the main drain line is clogged and the system is using the backup. Get the primary drain cleared soon, because if the backup clogs too, the water will end up in the ceiling or the garage. We clear the main line and check why it clogged.

The outdoor unit hums but the fan is not spinning. What should I do?

Turn the system off. A humming unit with a stopped fan usually means a failed capacitor or a worn fan motor. Without the fan, the compressor overheats quickly and can be damaged. Do not try to start the fan by pushing the blades with a stick, since the capacitor can hold a dangerous charge. We test the capacitor and the motor and replace what failed.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
