Should I replace my ductwork when I replace the system?

Not always, but it is the right time to check. Ducts that are crushed, leaking, poorly insulated or too small for the house can cancel out much of what a new system offers. If yours are in decent shape, sealing and repairing them may be enough. If they are original and failing, replacing them with the system saves a second disruption later. We inspect them and give you both prices.

My upstairs is always hot. Should I just get a bigger system?

Usually not. A bigger system cools the downstairs faster and shuts off before the upstairs catches up, and it controls humidity poorly. The fix is more often in the ducts, the returns and the attic insulation, or in zoning the house so each floor is controlled on its own. We look at why the upstairs is losing before we size anything.

What refrigerant do new systems use?

New systems are moving to refrigerants with lower climate impact, such as R-454B and R-32, as R-410A is being phased down under federal rules. R-22, found in much older equipment, is no longer produced and is costly to buy. If you are replacing, the new system will use one of the newer refrigerants, and the indoor and outdoor units need to be matched for it.

What warranty comes with a new system?

Most manufacturers offer a parts warranty on new equipment, often ten years, but many require you to register the equipment within a short window after installation or the coverage drops. Labor is usually covered separately and varies from contractor to contractor. Whoever installs your system, get the parts and labor coverage in writing and make sure the registration gets done.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
