The outdoor fan runs but the compressor will not start. What causes that?

Most often it is a failed capacitor, a worn contactor, or a compressor that has trouble starting and needs help getting going. You may hear the fan spinning with a click or a hum from the unit, and no cold air inside. Turn the system off rather than letting it keep trying, because a compressor straining to start can overheat. We test the capacitor and the contactor first, since those are the inexpensive fixes.

Why do coastal systems keep having electrical problems?

Salt air corrodes metal connections, and corroded connections create resistance and heat. The contactor points pit and burn, capacitor terminals rust, and the lugs inside the disconnect loosen over time. Each one can stop the system cold or cook the parts next to it. We clean or replace what is corroded and tighten every connection, which heads off a lot of the repeat calls we see near the beach.

My thermostat says it is cooling, but the air handler inside is not running.

That usually points to the blower motor, its capacitor, or the control board in the air handler. It can also be a tripped float switch, which cuts power on purpose when the drain backs up. Check the breaker for the air handler and look for water in the pan. If neither is the problem, turn the system off and call us, because the outdoor unit can freeze up running without any airflow inside.

Why is there rust-colored water around my air handler?

Older metal drain pans rust through, especially in air handlers that have been sweating in a hot garage or closet for years. Once the pan rusts, condensate leaks out around the unit instead of draining away, and it can soak the platform, the drywall or the condo below. We check the primary and secondary pans, the drain line and the float switch, and replace the pan if it has rusted through.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
