How does salt air damage an air conditioner?

Salt rides in on the Gulf breeze and settles on the outdoor coil, where it holds moisture against the thin aluminum fins. The fins corrode, flake and stop shedding heat, so the compressor runs hotter and longer. Salt also works into the contactor, the capacitor terminals and the disconnect. The closer you live to the water, the faster it happens, which is why we look at the coil and the connections on every visit here.

Are coil coatings worth it near the water?

For homes and condos within sight of the Gulf or the harbor, they often are. A protective coating on the outdoor coil slows corrosion and can add years to a coil that would otherwise pit through early. It costs less to coat a new or clean coil than to replace a corroded one. If you are a few miles inland, regular rinsing is usually enough, and we will tell you which camp you are in.

My outdoor unit sat in storm surge water. Can it be saved?

Usually not, and you should not turn it back on to find out. Salt water that reaches the compressor, the fan motor and the control board corrodes everything it touches, and the damage keeps spreading for weeks after the water goes down. Leave the breaker off, take photos for your insurance claim, and have it inspected. We will tell you honestly whether anything is worth saving.

On the hottest days my house only cools to about 78. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily. A properly sized system is built to hold a comfortable temperature on a typical summer day, not to drop the house to 70 when it is 97 outside. What tells us more is the temperature split, the difference between the air going into the return and the air coming out of the vents, which should usually run somewhere around 16 to 22 degrees. If yours is well under that, the system is low on capacity and we need to find out why.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
