My capacitor keeps failing. Why?

A capacitor that dies every summer is usually a symptom. The common causes are the wrong rating installed last time, a fan or compressor motor that is failing and overworking it, low voltage from a loose connection, or a unit baking in direct sun with poor airflow. Replacing the capacitor again without finding the cause just buys you another season. We check all of those before we swap it.

My heat pump is blowing warm air even though it is set to cool.

That usually means the reversing valve, the part that switches the heat pump between heating and cooling, is stuck or its solenoid has failed. It can also be a wiring or thermostat setting issue, which is the easy fix. Turn the system off so it is not heating the house in July, and we will test the valve and the controls.

There is a sewer smell coming from my vents.

That is worth tracking down quickly. Often the air handler drain is tied into the house plumbing and its trap has dried out, letting sewer gas get pulled into the return. Sometimes a duct runs past a plumbing vent with a leak in it. Fixing the trap or sealing the leak usually solves it. If there is any chance it is gas rather than sewage, leave the house and call the utility first.

Is it okay to run the AC without a filter for a day?

For a few hours while you get a new one, it will not ruin anything. Much longer than that, and everything the filter would have caught ends up on the indoor coil and the blower wheel, which is far harder to clean than a filter is to replace. Keep a spare filter on the shelf so you never have to choose.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
