Is it okay to run the AC with the windows open?

Not if you want it to actually cool the house. An air conditioner is built to work in a sealed space, and open windows let humid outside air pour back in as fast as the system removes it, so it runs constantly and never catches up. Enjoy the breeze on a mild day with the AC off, but do not run both at once.

What is a variable speed system, and is it worth paying more for?

A variable speed system ramps its output up and down to match what the house needs instead of switching on at full blast and shutting off, which holds the temperature and the humidity steadier and usually runs quieter. It costs more up front and it is not the right upgrade for every house or every budget. We can tell you honestly whether your house would feel the difference.

My house feels humid even when the thermostat says it is cool enough.

Temperature and humidity are not the same job. A system that is oversized for the house cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull the moisture out, which leaves the house cool but clammy. The fix is usually addressing the sizing or the runtime, not just lowering the thermostat further, which wastes power without fixing the feel.

Is it normal for the outdoor unit to get frost on it in mild weather?

No, and it is worth calling about. Ice on the outdoor unit or the indoor coil usually means airflow is restricted, somewhere from a dirty filter to a failing blower, or the refrigerant charge is off. Running it iced up more than briefly can damage the compressor. Turn the system to fan only until it thaws, then have it looked at before running it in cooling mode again.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important. Give ‘em a call!
