That is the condensate drain, and a steady drip on a humid day means the system is doing its job. The water is what it pulled out of your air. What you do not want is nothing at all in the middle of summer, because that usually means the drain is clogged and the water is backing up somewhere you cannot see.

Do I need to change the filter more often with pets?

Yes, usually. Hair and dander load a filter fast, and a clogged filter chokes the airflow and can freeze the coil. With a couple of dogs or cats, look at the filter monthly instead of quarterly. Hold it up to a light, and if you cannot see light through it, it is past due no matter what the box said.

Can I plant shrubs or build a fence around the outdoor unit?

You can, as long as it can still breathe. The unit needs open space around it and room above it, or it recirculates its own hot air and works harder for less. Leave a couple of feet on every side and keep any lattice or fencing open enough for air to pass. Leave us room to pull the panels off when it needs service too.

Is a maintenance plan worth it, or should I just call when something breaks?

It depends on how you like to handle things. A plan gets the visits on the calendar so they actually happen, which is most of the benefit, and it usually comes with some priority when you do need service. If you are the sort who will book a tune-up twice a year on your own, you get the same result without a plan. We are happy either way.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
