What does a humidistat do, and do I need one?

A humidistat lets the system run to control humidity, not just temperature, which matters when a house sits empty for weeks. You set the thermostat a few degrees higher than normal, let the humidistat hold the moisture down, and you come back to a house that does not smell like a closet. We can tell you whether your system already supports one.

Is it cheaper to leave the AC at one temperature all day?

Usually not, though the savings are smaller here than up north. Letting the house drift a few degrees while you are out costs less than holding it steady, as long as you are not asking the system to drop it ten degrees the minute you walk in. In this humidity, big swings are what cause trouble, so keep the setback modest.

Can I get the bedrooms cooler at night without freezing the rest of the house?

That is what zoning does. Dampers in the ductwork split the house into areas with their own thermostats, so the bedrooms get more air at night and less during the day. It works best when the duct system can handle it, and it is not the right answer for every house. We look at the ducts first and tell you whether zoning makes sense or a couple of damper adjustments would do.

Do ceiling fans actually help?

They help you, not the house. Moving air makes your skin feel cooler, so you can leave the thermostat a degree or two higher and stay just as comfortable, and that does save money. What a fan cannot do is cool an empty room, so running one when nobody is home only adds heat from the motor. Turn them off when you leave.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
