My AC keeps up at night but falls behind every afternoon. Why?

That usually means the system has little capacity to spare. Afternoon sun on the roof and walls is the heaviest load of the day, so a system that is low on refrigerant, has a dirty coil, or was undersized for the house runs out of room first in the afternoon. We check the charge, the coils and the airflow, then tell you whether it is a repair or a sizing issue.

The air handler inside is squealing. What does that mean?

On most newer systems a squeal comes from a blower motor with worn bearings. On some older units with belt-driven blowers, it can be a worn or loose belt. Either way, it is worth catching early, because a blower that seizes stops all airflow and can let the indoor coil freeze. Turn the system off if the noise gets worse, and have us take a look.

The breaker for my AC feels hot. Is that dangerous?

It can be. A breaker that runs hot often has a loose or corroded connection, or it is undersized for the load, and that heat can damage the panel over time. Turn the AC off at the thermostat, do not keep resetting it, and have it checked. We look at the breaker, the wire size and the connections at both the panel and the outdoor unit.

My sprinklers spray the outdoor unit. Is that a problem?

It can be, especially on well water. Iron and minerals in the water dry onto the coil fins and the cabinet, forming a crust that blocks airflow and speeds up corrosion. Adjust the sprinkler heads so they miss the unit, and have the coil cleaned if you see orange or white buildup on it. We clean that buildup off and check the coil for damage.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
