A lizard got into my outdoor unit and now the AC will not run.

It happens all the time in Florida. Lizards and frogs crawl into the contactor, the switch that sends power to the compressor and fan, and when it closes they get caught between the contacts and short it out or burn it. The contactor and sometimes nearby wiring need replacing. We clean it out, replace what was damaged and check that the rest of the unit was not hurt.

Why does the air from my vents smell sour, like vinegar?

A sour smell usually comes from bacteria or mold growing on a wet indoor coil or in a drain pan that does not empty. It can also come from an air handler in a hot, damp closet. Cleaning the coil and pan and making sure the drain flows usually takes care of it. If the smell is sharp or chemical instead, turn the system off and call us.

My newer home's AC is already having problems. Is that normal?

It is more common than it should be. Builder systems are sometimes installed quickly, with refrigerant charges never checked, drains without enough slope or ducts that were kinked during construction. Check whether your builder or the manufacturer warranty still covers it. We can find what is wrong and tell you whether it is an installation problem or a failed part.

My AC blows warm air for a few minutes before it cools. Is something wrong?

A short burst of warm air when the system first starts can be normal, since the ducts in a hot attic heat the air sitting in them. It should turn cool within a minute or two. If it takes much longer, or the air never gets properly cold, the system may be low on refrigerant, the outdoor unit may be slow to start, or ducts may be leaking in the attic.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
