Should I clean my coil with a spray cleaner from the store?

A gentle, coil-safe foaming cleaner on the outdoor coil can help, but use it carefully. Harsh or acid cleaners can eat the aluminum fins, and spraying too hard bends them flat. Never spray inside the cabinet near the electrical parts. If the coil is heavily caked, a professional cleaning is the safer bet, and we do it as part of a maintenance visit.

Is it normal for my outdoor unit to steam in the winter?

Usually, yes. On cold, damp mornings a heat pump goes into defrost to melt frost off the outdoor coil, and you may see steam rising and hear a whoosh when it switches. That is normal. If the unit stays coated in thick ice, or defrost seems to run constantly, have it checked, since that points to a defrost or refrigerant problem.

My AC has gotten louder. Can maintenance help?

Often it can. Loose panels, a fan blade knocked out of balance, debris in the cage, worn mounting feet and a contactor that buzzes all add noise over a few summers. Tightening, cleaning and replacing small worn parts can quiet it down a lot. A grinding or screeching noise is different and should be checked right away, since it can mean a failing motor.

How can I test my drain safety switch?

Many systems have a float switch in the drain pan or on the drain line that shuts the system off if water backs up. With the system running, you can carefully pour a little water into the secondary pan or lift the float, and the system should shut off within a minute or so. If it keeps running, the switch is not protecting you. We test it on every maintenance visit.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
