What is the best way to cool rooms with big west-facing windows?

Afternoon sun through west windows can add more heat than the rest of the room combined. Shades or blinds closed in the afternoon, solar screens or window film, and a ceiling fan all help, and they cost far less than a bigger system. If one room still runs hot, we check whether its supply and return are big enough to keep up.

Does it matter where my thermostat is?

It matters a lot. A thermostat in direct sun, near the kitchen, beside an outside door or on an outside wall reads the wrong temperature and runs the whole house around that one spot. The best place is an inside wall in a central room, away from vents and heat sources. If yours is in a bad spot, moving it is often a simple fix.

Can I install a smart thermostat myself?

Sometimes, but be careful. Many smart thermostats need a common wire for power that older systems do not have, and heat pump wiring is easy to get wrong, which can leave you with no heat or a system stuck in the wrong mode. If you are not sure what your wiring is doing, we can install it and make sure it is set up for your equipment.

Is it normal for my AC to run almost all day in August?

On the hottest afternoons, a properly sized system may run nearly nonstop, and that is fine as long as the house stays comfortable and the air feels dry. What is not normal is a system that runs all day and still loses ground, or one that runs long into a mild evening. Those point to low refrigerant, a dirty coil or a duct problem.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
