How often do the air ducts need to be cleaned?

Less often than the ads suggest. Most homes do not need duct cleaning on a schedule. It makes sense after construction or remodeling dust, when there is visible mold inside the ducts, or when animals have been in them. A good filter and a sealed return do more to keep ducts clean than a cleaning every year, and we will tell you honestly whether yours need it.

What is a UV light for the AC, and is it worth it?

It is a lamp mounted near the indoor coil that keeps mold and bacteria from growing on the wet surfaces inside the air handler. It can help with a musty smell or a coil that keeps getting slimy, but it will not clean the air in the rest of the house, and the bulb needs replacing every year or two. For some homes it is worth it, and for many a clean coil and a good filter do the job.

Why do my energy bills keep going up?

Part of it may be the rates, but a system that is slipping costs more to run long before it breaks. Dirty coils, a weak capacitor, low refrigerant or leaking ducts all make it run longer for the same comfort. Compare this summer’s usage in kilowatt hours with last summer’s, not just the dollar amount. If the usage is climbing, a maintenance visit usually shows why.

My outdoor unit is sitting crooked. Does that matter?

It can. Pads settle in sandy soil, and a unit that leans puts strain on the refrigerant lines where they connect and keeps the compressor from running the way it was designed to. A slight tilt is not an emergency, but a unit that keeps sinking or leans hard should be leveled. We check the pad on every visit and can reset it or put in a new one.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
