Does the brand matter more than the installer?

The installer matters more. Most major brands build good equipment, and the differences between them are smaller than the gap between a careful installation and a sloppy one. Line sets that were never cleaned, a charge nobody verified, ducts that were never sealed: those are what make a good system act like a bad one. Ask about the install as much as the badge on the side.

Do new outdoor units need hurricane tie-downs?

Yes, and here it is not optional. The condenser has to be anchored to the pad so it does not become a projectile in a storm, and the inspector will look for it. We set the unit on a proper pad and strap it as part of the job, and if the old pad has sunk or cracked we tell you before install day rather than after.

I have two quotes and they are thousands apart. How do I compare them?

Line them up piece by piece. Is the equipment the same size and efficiency, and is the indoor unit included or only the outdoor? Does the price cover the permit, the pad, the line set, the drain, the thermostat and the electrical, or are those extras? Is there a labor warranty in writing? Once both quotes cover the same work, the gap usually gets much smaller and easier to understand.

Do I need to be home for the whole installation?

Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to be there at the end so we can walk you through the new thermostat, but you do not have to hover all day. Most changeouts take the better part of a day. If it is a seasonal house and you are out of state, we can arrange access ahead of time so the job does not wait on a key.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air.
