Do manufactured homes need a different kind of air conditioning?

Often they do. Most manufactured homes use a packaged unit or a split system that pushes air through a duct running inside the floor, sometimes called the belly, with a crossover duct connecting the two halves of a double wide. The equipment has to suit that duct system, and the ducts need as much attention as the unit. We look at the ductwork under the home on every visit, not just the box outside.

Is the AC in a new build home usually sized right?

Not always. Builders often size the system by square footage alone, so some houses end up with more capacity than they need, which cools fast but leaves the air damp. Others come with the most basic efficiency the code allows. If your newer home feels clammy or runs up big bills, it is worth having the sizing and the airflow checked before you assume something is broken.

Does my attic insulation affect my AC?

More than most people think. An attic in a Florida summer climbs well past the temperature outside, and thin or settled insulation lets that heat soak straight into the ceilings, so the system runs longer to keep up. If your ducts run through the attic, it also warms the air before it reaches the rooms. Adding insulation is one of the cheaper ways to take load off an air conditioner, and we can tell you whether yours is holding up.

Can a surge protector protect my AC?

It helps. A surge protector mounted at the outdoor disconnect or the panel absorbs spikes from lightning and from the power coming back after an outage, before they reach the control board and the compressor. It will not stop a direct strike, but it costs little next to the parts it protects, and Sumter County gets plenty of summer lightning. We can add one during a visit.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
