Can I add air conditioning to a workshop or detached garage?

Usually, and a ductless mini split is often the simplest way to do it. It needs a spot for the outdoor unit, power from the building’s panel and a short line set through the wall, with no ductwork at all. Insulation matters more than the equipment, because a metal building with no insulation will overpower almost any small system. We look at the building and the power available, then size it to fit.

What should I do if my AC goes out during a heat wave?

Keep people safe first, especially older folks and anyone with health problems. Close the blinds on the sunny side, run fans, drink water and move to the coolest room, or go somewhere with air conditioning if the house keeps heating up. Then check the breaker and the thermostat before you call. When you do call, tell us if someone in the home is at risk, so we can plan the visit around that.

Should the fan on my thermostat be set to on or auto?

In Florida, auto is usually the better choice. On auto, the fan stops when the cooling stops, and the moisture pulled out of the air drains away. Set to on, the fan keeps blowing across a wet coil and puts some of that moisture back into the house, which raises the humidity and your power bill. Use on for a short while if you want to move air around, then switch back.

Why does the house smell like burning dust the first time the heat comes on?

That is usually dust burning off the heat strips after months of sitting, and it should fade within an hour or so. Change the filter before the first cold morning to cut it down. If the smell is strong, smells like melting plastic, or comes back every time the heat runs, turn the system off and have it checked, because that points to an electrical problem.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
