Why does my AC struggle after we added a room?

Because the system was sized for the house before the addition. An extra bedroom, an enclosed porch or a converted garage adds load, and if the new space was tied into the existing ducts, the rest of the house often gets less air too. Sometimes rebalancing the ducts is enough. Other times the new room needs its own small system, like a ductless unit. We check the load and the airflow before recommending either.

Should bedroom doors stay open for the AC to work right?

In a lot of homes, yes. If a bedroom has a supply vent but no return, closing the door traps the air, the room gets stuffy and the rest of the house is pulled slightly out of balance. You may notice doors that whistle or slam. A transfer grille or a small jumper duct over the door lets the air get back to the return with the door closed, and it is a fairly simple fix.

Does a new roof affect my air conditioning?

It can, both ways. Roofers work in and around the attic, and ducts, vent boots and the air handler’s drain line can get knocked loose or crushed. On the other hand, a new roof is a good chance to add a radiant barrier or better attic ventilation, which takes real load off the AC. After a reroof, it is worth having someone check the attic side of the system.

What humidity should I keep my house at?

Somewhere around 45 to 55 percent is a good target for a Florida home. Above 60 percent, mold and dust mites start to thrive and the house feels clammy even when it is cool. A simple digital hygrometer from a hardware store will tell you where you are. If your house stays high even with the AC running, the system may be oversized or losing air somewhere, and that is worth checking.

I got to see everything before it was replaced in my attic. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done and why my house wasn’t holding cool air. I opened up a can of worms and luckily they know what they are doing. I had a solution in minutes. It’s a pricey procedure but good air quality and a efficient electric bill is very important.
